I strive to execute ideas without hesitation or compromise while maintaining excitement, spontaneity and a sense of reinvention within my work. My current interest is in vessels as abstract images of decorative art, creating a pastiche of vast approaches to object-making. The forms pivot between geometric, figurative and organic objects based on iconic pottery - they evolve from the historically inspired to an individual style. The surfaces speak to contemporary ceramics through subtle textures, rich colours and graphic drawings - combining the material qualities of glaze with a history of pattern and ornament. Using the confining elements of pots (foot, belly, handle, lip..) is a challenging opportunity to play with scale, distort proportions and consider vessels as formal compositions. As a result of questions I've confronted about the role of sophisticated tools and newer technologies in current ceramics, I've recently moved from throwing and slipcasting to handbuilding. Finding a technique that is simple and direct has led to the creation of work that seeks a balance between the loose and the tight, the playful and the serious.
